Elizabeth Mayrose – Ronald McDonald House Volunteer

While most of us struggle to find enough hours, there are always those that seem to have a knack for finding a couple of extra hours in the day.

Elizabeth Mayrose, Prepaid Coordinator-Technical Support at Global Tel*Link, is one of those people.

In addition to her hectic work schedule with GTL, Elizabeth somehow finds the time to volunteer with the Ronald McDonald house in Mobile, Alabama as well as organizing a highly successful annual fundraiser called Girls Just Want to Have Fun.

The Ronald McDonald house is a nationwide charity which provides temporary accommodation for the families of children that are being treated in nearby hospitals. These houses, in their own words, are “built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal, or where they will lay their head at night to rest”.

While Elizabeth’s experience with the Ronald McDonald House is partly informed by her experiences as a volunteer, she also has an extremely personal connection to the Mobile, Alabama chapter.

When Elizabeth’s daughter suffered a very serious head injury in January of 2008, it meant that Elizabeth spent many days, and nights, in her daughter’s hospital room. Although an extremely difficult experience, this extended stay in the hospital allowed Elizabeth to meet a number of other families who traveled from all over the country to take advantage of the level of care that the hospital could offer their children. Many of these families were housed in the Ronald McDonald house and the monumental importance of this charitable support system was eye opening for Elizabeth and her family.

Now, Elizabeth joins the Ronald McDonald house as a volunteer and organizer. She can sometimes be found helping to serve dinners to the residents, but more often her efforts are focused on organization and execution of the charitable auction she chairs.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun is a 6 year old fundraiser that auctions off gently used purses which have been donated to the event. Elizabeth serves as the primary organizer and under her leadership, and her husband’s lighting design, the event continues to grow every year. In past years, it has raised an astonishing $30-35,000 for the Ronald McDonald House, but Elizabeth hopes to surpass that goal this year.

“This event is so important to keeping the Ronald McDonald House up and running. It provides a crucial service for the people travelling to Mobile for medical treatment for their children and I want to do my part to assist the House in helping as many people as possible.”

The next Girls Just Want to Have Fun auction takes place on September 10, 2015. If you are interested in learning more about this amazing event or even to make a donation, please visit their website at www.rmhcmobile.org/girls-just-wanna-have-fun.
