Changing the Way Correctional Facilities Approach Professional Staff Training

By: Dr. Turner Nashe, GTL Executive Vice President, Education Programs

At the beginning of May, GTL announced that we would be providing current facility customers with free 15-day subscriptions to access a package of wellness courses that were added to our Learning Management System (LMS) in support of National Correctional Officers & Employees Week. With a great response during the initial period from May 6 to June 30, 2019, we decided to extend that offer until August 31 to allow more facility staff to realize the benefits and importance of professional staff training.

Over 150 people across the United States registered to take part in the promotion in order to access the package of 25 courses, which ranged in topic from “Developing a Growth Mindset” to “Learning from Failure.” The courses focused on helping employees become more efficient at their jobs, communicate better with their coworkers, and reach their goals through perseverance and resilience. All the courses were completed by at least one registrant, but the two most popular courses were “Avoid Procrastination by Getting Organized Instead” and “Facing and Resolving Conflict in the Workplace.”

By training corrections professionals, facilities improve operational efficiencies and reduce staff turnover. Facilities benefit by attracting and retaining a multi-generational workforce, while staff members can grow in their jobs, efficiently perform their duties, and climb the career ladder. GTL offers customizable professional staff training that staff members of all levels can utilize and fit to their needs and learning pace.
